If you go to a mental hospital, how would you get back out?

Until they see your mentally stable enough to get out of there? Are they allowed to keep you there forever if they wanted? I'm not insane but I dont want to go to jail for a 2nd DUI hit and run so im going to say im insane cuz i cut myself and i see a therapist
